Outdoor Air VS. Indoor Air

When you protect your mouth and nose outdoors from the poor air,
you may not know that actually, the air you are breathing indoors is not any better than outdoors.
The US EPA conducted the BASE study,
a five-year study that found many residential and commercial buildings have extremely high air pollution inside,
often 10 times worse than outdoors. Indoor air pollution may be more harmful than people think.
Even without opening the door and windows,
PM2.5 can still sneak into your home through gaps in the doors, windows and vents in the building.
When outdoor PM2.5 is blown away naturally by the wind improving air quality,
indoor PM2.5 may remain higher due to closed doors and windows.

What is PM2.5?

Particles less than or equal to 10 micrometers in diameter are so small that they can get into the lungs,
potentially causing serious health problems.
Ten micrometers is less than the width of a single human hair.
Coarse dust particles (PM10) are 2.5 to 10 micrometers in diameter.

The Dangers of PM2.5?

Although very small, PM2.5’s effects on the human body should not be underestimated. A pollution source smaller than 10 μm, which cannot be seen by the naked eye, may be an invisible killer to human health. As it enters the human body through our respiratory system and reaches the pulmonary alveolus, it may cause cardiopulmonary disease, brain stroke, respiratory disease, etc. Scientific research also reports that fine particulate matter may be a source for causing adenocarcinoma.

 

Sources of Indoor Air Pollution?

According to the EPA, our indoor environment is two to five times more toxic than our outdoor environment,

The World Health Organization (WHO) agrees,
reporting that almost 3% of the global burden of disease is due to indoor air pollution.

The Air we breath mainly consists of nitrogen (78.09%), oxygen (20.95%), argon (0.93%) and carbon dioxide (0.03%).
Taking in air with excessive or inadequate oxygen content may make the body feel uncomfortable and become unhealthy.
The air exchange rate needed for a person is 20 m3/h.
The number of people in the space and the size of the space are two factors for choosing an air exchange rate.

Suppose the bathroom in your home is 4m2 in floor space and 2.5m in height.
